Since 1957

The story in the brick

The Twin Birches went up in 1956–57 for John G. and Elsa C. Young, on two lots where a pair of 1895 houses had stood. The permit (no. 451880, October 1956) names an architect whose signature reads “Blaine McCo…” — in all likelihood Blaine McCool, one of Seattle’s most prolific apartment designers, whose glass-fronted stair towers look a lot like the one glowing in our photos.

By September 1959 the script sign was already on the wall, young birches out front — likely where the name came from. A few years later the World’s Fair opened a few blocks south, and the building has been watching the neighborhood change ever since: 31 homes, same brick, same sign.

The building’s 1937–1972 assessor record card — with the 1957 and 1959 photographs — is held by the Washington State Archives: King County Assessor, Real Property Record Cards, PS317-1-200-545780-0191.

Little changed since ’59 — brick, glass stair tower, and the sign.
